Sitting Too Long? Occupational Hazard Remedy

Special Offer - Do you have a Text Neck problem? Find out how you can fix it

How many hours do you sit in a chair in average per day?  And for how many years?  We, IT workers, sit way too long compared to most other occupations.  It's way more than 8 hours a day when you factor in all that sitting outside of the working hours - eating, watching TV, surfing on the Internet, etc.

Most people in their 20s and 30s may have not reached that threshold where the body has reached its limit from year of sitting for extended period of time.  It will eventually catch up

A recent study found that:
  • A nearly 50 percent increased risk of death from any cause
  • About a 125 percent increased risk of events associated with cardiovascular disease, such as chest pain (angina) or heart attack
What's even more interesting about the finding is that regular exercise didn't offset the risks associated with sitting too long.  The only way to reduce the risk is to cut down your sitting time.

I see some folks in the office has standing desk where they stand all day instead of sitting.  This might be a good solution if you have a particular problem with your back or spine and sitting for any extended time - even more than 30 min - is not an option.  However, standing too long is just as bad as sitting too long.  Just ask anyone who has too stand all day as part of their job.

The right solution is to alternate between sitting and standing. I recently got sit/stand desk which has many variation of names such as sit-stand, sit to stand, convertible and uplift desk.  It is quiet amazing how well this desk works.  I cannot speak for products from other companies, but the one from Varidesk is so well made and sturdy.  Changing from sit to stand or stand to sit position takes a few seconds without much effort.

I'm planning on a 1-2 hours per day standing mode, and gradually increase to 50/50 even split between sitting and standing.  There are about a half dozen different models from Varidesk to fit different desk sizes and shapes.  I have Cube Plus 40 model to fit in on the small section of my desk.  It still supports dual 24-inch monitor setup.  The one picture below, Pro Plus 36 and Pro Plus 48 are the most popular models.
