What is PMI Professional in Business Analysis?

The market demand for data professional has been and will be growing at increasing rate for the foreseeable future.  The data professional is in fact pretty big field covering many job titles such as data scientist, data analyst, data engineer, business analyst and business intelligence professional.

PMI has been one of the most reputable and recognizable professional organization partly due to its immensely popular certification program, Project Management Professional (PMP)

PMI has developed this new certification program called PMI PBA (Professional in Business Analysis) at just the right time to meet the demand of hiring managers looking for highly skilled analysts.

As you probably know, all of PMI's certification program is quite demanding in its requirement.  Part of it is due to its prerequisite requirement for taking the exam.

PMI PBA is no exception.  Take a look at the prerequisite for the certification which is a little short of PMP requirement:

  • Secondary degree (high school diploma, associate’s degree or the global equivalent)
  • 7,500 hours of business analysis experience
  • 2,000 hours working on project teams*
  • 35 contact hours of education in business analysis

Accroding to PMI:
With its emphasis on requirements management, business analysis has become a competency of critical importance to project management. Becoming certified as a business analysis (BA) expert can move your career in a fresh direction while opportunities for BAs are on the rise.
Inaccurate requirements gathering is the second highest cause of project failure yet only half of organizations have the resources in place to perform this function properly, according to our Pulse of the Profession® research. Through 2019, over half of organizations expect to see an increase in their demand for BAs and the integration of requirements management and business analysis with project management.
It’s time to become the certified expert your organization needs. If you work with stakeholders in defining requirements, shaping project outputs and driving intended business outcomes, the PMI Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA)® will spotlight your valuable skills.

[post_ad] PMI PBA is a great certification to have for new and seasoned professionals in the field even with its short history because it is sponsored by PMI.

There are many ways to prepare for the exam such as online classes and boot camp.

First I highly recommend checking out the official PMI PBA Handbook - view PDF.
There is one highly recommend study guide book which is available on

It's called PMI-PBA Certification Study Guide, and is highly rated by many who passed the exam.
